Detroit Catholic — Creating a new era in Catholic news.

Services Web, Branding

The Michigan Catholic has been an award-winning and honoured Catholic news source in the US for the past 150 years. In the call for the New Evangelization, Pope Saint John Paul II asked for new ways of communication to bring the gospel into today’s culture, which meant, for this historic newspaper, a big shift.

We partnered with the Archdiocese of Detroit to reimagine and evolve the news experience while retaining the brand’s legacy as a trusted news source.

New Look, Same Heart

While the brand was beginning new, the heart of it would be an evolution of the past. The goal of the logo was to draw in a new audience with a fresh look while still building into the heritage of the brand’s roots, using symbols like folded paper for their past and the resemblance of a play button for their future.

Detroit Catholic came to us wanting to build a brand that reflected the way their news is progressing and moving into the digital world. For this reason, we moved away from a traditional masthead logo and proposed a brand that is current, moving forward, and confident in its message.

Catholic News Done Differently

While most Catholic News sites focus on the Church as a whole, Detroit Catholic took a refreshing approach that focused intently on their local Catholic community. Using the Tilma tool as a platform, their innovative strategy fed their audience and set them apart from Catholic news sources across the US.

For the Detroit Catholic staff and writers, this innovative approach translated into seamless and simple website management that didn't sacrifice the quality of design or customization. For example, team members can edit articles right on the site, format assets without affecting layout, and feed in outside articles with a simple link. The result is a focus on creating the best digital content without the distraction of technology.

The Ripples of New Media in the Church

To support the brand presence, strategic social media channels were put in place and an email digest that keeps the audience connected on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, something unique to the Catholic news space.

With a new brand, the Detroit Catholic ended up stirring its own buzz in the news, popping up in places like Detroit Free Press, Angelus News, and Catholic News Agency.

Stepping into the New Evangelization

As the Archdiocese of Detroit continues to respond to the call of the New Evangelization, the Detroit Catholic is doing more than just service to the news community; their team is boldly stepping into the calling God has on His Church and His people.
